What is an Aspect Ratio?

An aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between an image or screen's width and height. It's expressed as two numbers separated by a colon, like 16:9 — meaning for every 16 units of width, there are 9 units of height.

Aspect ratios are reduced to their simplest form using the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD). For example, 1920×1080 simplifies to 16:9 because both numbers are divisible by 120.

When scaling, one dimension determines the other to preserve the ratio. Always calculate new dimensions this way to avoid distortion in images and video.
