How to Compress PDF Online
ToolsPix PDF Compressor reduces your PDF file size by re-encoding embedded images and optimizing the document structure — all using pdf-lib running entirely in your browser. There is no software to install, no account to create, and no need to upload files to any server.
Why use ToolsPix PDF Compressor?
- Completely free with no file size restrictions — compress as many PDFs as you need.
- 100% private: your files are processed locally and never leave your device.
- Works on any device — Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android.
- Three compression levels (Maximum, Balanced, Light) plus a custom image quality slider for full control.
- No watermarks, no sign-up, no tracking of any kind.
Steps to compress a PDF
Drop your PDF onto the upload area or click "Choose PDF file" to select a file. Pick a compression level — Balanced works well for most documents. Adjust the image quality slider if you need finer control, then click "Compress PDF". When the process is complete, click "Download compressed PDF" to save the result. Once the page is loaded, the tool also works completely offline.
FAQ
How much will my PDF be compressed?
It depends entirely on your PDF's content. PDFs with lots of high-resolution images can shrink by 50–80%. Text-only PDFs or PDFs that were already compressed may see little to no reduction — that's normal and expected.
Will text and layout look different after compression?
No. Text, fonts, page layout, and vector graphics are not affected. Only embedded raster images are re-encoded at a lower quality. At the Balanced setting, the visual difference is typically not noticeable.
Why is my compressed file the same size or larger?
This happens when your PDF contains no compressible images, or when it was already optimized. pdf-lib's structure optimization adds a small overhead. In these cases, your original file is already optimal.
Can I compress a password-protected PDF?
No. Encrypted PDFs cannot be processed without the password. Remove the password first (open in your PDF viewer and export without encryption), then compress here.
Is there a file size limit?
No strict limit — it depends on your device's available memory. PDFs up to several hundred megabytes typically work fine on modern devices.
